When Kat arrives she confirms that Alwyn had somehow drowned, Rose continues to study the ashes and when she drops a little blood on it, she confirms that there are living things in it, She goes to see Magnus, who tells her that the ship has left to help another platform first, Rose brings him and Kat into her office to explain that the ash has some kind of parasitic germ that seeks out hosts and quickly repairs their wounds because she wants a healthy body, They should avoid prolonged exposure to the ash and monitor people with open wounds, Magnus authorizes Rose to take blood samples from the entire crew to compare to what they have from Baz, In the mess hall, Heather notices that the fog has finally cleared up and that the rig next door is completely destroyed, Fullmer finds Buzz looking into Rose's search and tries to offer to help, but Buzz refuses because Light needs him, Rose also arrives and sees that Buzz has taken his blood sample, so when she asks for his cooperation, he runs off, When Magnus hears what happened, he sends Cat to check everyone for injuries because they can't get tested anymore, After Vollmer was deposed, Magnus called another meeting, Now the fog and ash are gone, half of the team wants to clear the rig completely, and the other half has to find Buzz, Rose continues to investigate and discovers that the spores have been seen before they were fossilized in the layers of the earth, They were supposed to die out with the dinosaurs, but digging deep has awakened a sleeping nest, Outside, Buzz dumps his blood sample into the sea, His body now fully healed, and he touched the water tanks as a test, instantly filling them with germs, He hides when he hears James looking for him, but when James sees polluted water and calls for help, so Buzz has to shut him up, Lars and Dunlin come into the room to find an injured James on the floor, Lars noticed that the spores in the water had begun to grow plants, In the machine room, Heather, Esther, and Murch also find plants growing on the oil, Suddenly the rig starts shaking again and Dunlin realizes James is bleeding, When the boy opens his hand, he reveals that he has lost a tooth, which means he is infected, Frightened, James strikes Dunlin and flees, The rig starts losing power again, so Magnus brings Vollmer out of his loneliness to get him to fix it, Heather sees Buzz and follows him into the mud pit, where Buzz is growing plants all over the place, Buzz explains that a million-year-old memory told him he needed to defend this place because it was under attack, and if he died everyone would fall with him, And suddenly James shows up too because he's joined Buzz's cause, The rest of the team realize Heather has gone missing and Lars comes to her rescue, causing Buzz and James to run away before Heather gets more answers, Vollmer manages to restore power and the team discovers that the glow in the production unit has gone out, They need to disconnect it from the electrical system to keep it from exploding, but the unit's control unit is in a mud pit where it can get germs, Their only option is to manually rekindle the flame, and Vollmer accepts the risk, Easter controls the lever to bring Fulmer closer to the module, but it is not enough, and so Fulmer removes his belt and gets as close as possible for a proper shot, The flashlight is turned on again successfully, but Vollmer is caught on fire and must be taken to the infirmary to be tended to for some serious burns on his back, At the mud pit, Buzz's visions worsen and he comes to the conclusion that they need to shut down the rig's system to stop the "attack", James tries to close the valve, but the pipes are still pressurized and could burst, so they'll get into the system at the source,
Later, after a visit from Rose, Follmer swears he feels okay and gets dressed because he wants to help, He, Rose, and Heather begin to work together on research, and Follmer unconsciously draws some circles on a pillow like Buzz used to, Suddenly Magnus calls them all into the control room, where he discovers that the pressure is incredibly high because Buzz is trying to bypass the vaults of the well, Vollmer can't control it remotely, so they'll have to take a risk with Paul's ROV, Easter steers the ROV and obtains underwater images that show the earthquakes have created a series of circles on the ground that remind Vollmer of his painting, The ROV carefully approaches the wellhead and seals it, making Buzz furious that his plan has failed, It tries to access the system directly from the CPU but it has an alarm on it, so they need Fulmer to disable it, Suddenly, Easter's phone receives a message, and the crew discovers that communications are back, Magnus tries to contact the coast guard and Fulmer googles the meaning behind the circuits which seem to communicate something, Rose searches the company's system for some containers that Heather found that no one knew about, only to discover a project called "Sirene" that she has no access to, She also finds Vollmer's drawings, Kat calls her wife, who explains that the company told the families the crew was fine and that they too had electrical problems, At that moment, the fog reaches the city, and now the people on the ground are without electricity, The internet signal drops, and the guard does not receive Magnus' messages asking for help, Buzz uses his spores' powers to communicate with Vollmer's body, which begins to heal more quickly, Vollmer also begins to hear a buzzing in his head, so he runs to the bathroom to look at his wounds, Rose sees that he is missing and goes to check on him, and Vollmer is stunned as he momentarily sees Buzz in the mirror, Rose confesses everything, who kisses him to calm him down, This causes Vollmer to have a vision of her suffering and an apparition of Buzz, asking him to join him, Hours later, Rose checks on Vollmer again, only to find a note he left behind, Rosa catches up with him and Cat joins her, and together they find Vollmer going to the mud pit, The girls get into the hole as well and the spores approach the cat but do not attack it, instead circling its belly as they are curious about the baby, Rose pulls Cat out before things get too bad, and they find the crew excited as a string of lights approaches the rig, It is a ship coming from the neighboring rig, The crew takes in the survivors and Rose meets Coake, who works in the company's research department, and demands that he be taken to the control room immediately, Cat checks the other men for any injuries, and Easter is surprised to see Harish's old flame among them, Coake explains that his machine exploded after a compression failure and he believes they need to prioritize access to the production unit,
Rose wants to know why Coake was sent to the rig, but refuses to explain, At the infirmary, Harish tells Easter a different story, When Coake got to the rig he sent a group of people home and the rest had to help him install some new equipment, They weren't pulling oil out of the well, they were sending something down, Then the fog came and people started to disappear, but Cook remained as calm as if he had done it before, Continue to push test equipment and ignore pressure warnings until the device explodes, Heather enters the system to review the list of survivors with the crew's files, but she can't find Coake's name, She tells Esther and Harish about this, and Harish explains that Coake was accessing the system with a temporary account that the IT guy made when he arrived, Before they left the platform, he erased everything related to the audition, Heather checks the system and Harish points out a strange name on the crew list that wasn't there before, There are emails telling the company that the organism has indeed spread, which means that Coake has always been known and that the company sent it on purpose, The cat checks on Rose and thinks the circles she's studying look like a tree, which makes Rose realize that this might be how the spores keep track of time, The gap between the rings refers to the five major mass extinction events, meaning the last ring is the present and closing quickly to destroy it, Coake explains that this is what happened in his area, the explosion caused infected people to open the well to blow it up, He wants to send a team to the production unit, but Magnus refuses to take the risk, and Rose guesses that all those containers and testing are Cirein's secret project, Vollmer finally joins Buzz and James, but notices that his mind is clearer than that of his friends, Buzz explains that he hasn't been exposed to the germs long enough yet, but they will soon take over, Buzz can help him take advantage of it if Vollmer accepts to deal with the system, Vollmer gets to work but it will take a while for the alarm to shut down, Dunlin, Lars, and Murch call Coake for a private meeting because they are tired of Magnus' bad decisions and want to hear Coake's thoughts, Coake explains that they can stop Baz by using the CO2 from the secret containers to bring him down, it's just a matter of entering the mud pit and connecting the CO2 to the ventilation system, The trio get the canisters from the containers and Dunlin becomes suspicious because the label says the carbon dioxide is mixed with something else, They take the packages to the mud pit and attach them to the ventilation shafts, protecting themselves with masks, Buzz sends James and Vollmer to check what's going on and James finds the trio first, only to suddenly get blood on them, The guys realize that the carbon dioxide isn't killing James, it's killing him and the plants because that was Cook's plan all along, Lars and Morch run away, but Dunlin does not join them until he is sure James cannot be saved, Vollmer tries to shut down the ventilation but he and Buzz pass out, In the control room, Cat finds Coake locking the doors around the mud pit after Lars and Murch escape, trapping Dunlin inside, Dunlin's mask runs out of oxygen and dies as well, Heather and Harish tell Rose and Magnus about Coake and they go to confront him, but Coake defends his actions as survival, Magnus opens the doors but can't get to the ventilation pits so Rose goes there and takes a mask from Lars to enter the mud pit, She manually closes the ventilation and then checks on Vollmer, who does not wake up when Rose shares the mask, However, when she accidentally touches the plants, the spores react and bring Vollmer back to consciousness, They escape the hole together while Buzz also wakes up and the final episode closes underwater, Magnus meets with Harish to hear the real story: Coaked pushed the test to the limits because he wanted to destroy the germs, and losing the rig was just collateral damage to stay alive, The ship came to their rescue but was wrecked, so they cleared the system and got away on a small lifeboat, meaning they were left behind to die, Next, he questions Magnus Coake, who explains that it was all company policy, They don't want to lose their precious oil reserves, they just want to keep drilling uninterrupted, and so Coake was sent to exterminate the germs, If they don't stop it now, it will spread all over the world, In order to survive, they need to kill every infected person, Magnus discusses her options with Rose, who believes killing the infected will do nothing, so she will work with Fulmer to find an alternative, Maybe Vollmer can communicate with spores like Buzz can and explain that they can cooperate instead of attacking each other, In the hole, Buzz feels the spores closing him in, and another quake hits the platform, Vollmer uses a small plant to contact Baz and sees the spores trying to power the next big slide to wipe the perimeter clean, Germs are a living web interconnected throughout the sea floor all over the world, Rose points out, so attacking them here would hardly hurt them, She thinks they should talk to Buzz and make him stop germs with his leotard, Magnus would rather team up with Coake to stop him, but the others support Rose's theory and Magnus gives them permission to try, Magnus, Rose, and Vollmer enter the Pit, where Magnus is keeping visions of his dead son, They find Buzz crying in a cloud of germs, saying that it is too late and that he has failed, Coake searches for Harish, stating that there are helicopters coming already and that he will bring Harish and his friend if he helps him finish his mission, Harish suspects, Coake wants to make the platform explode to cover everything, and he secretly activates the microphones before making Coake confess everything so everyone can hear him through the speakers, Earthquakes start to get worse and the whole building starts collapsing, Coake hits Harish to get him out of the way and the countdown to the explosion begins, this is the moment the helicopters finally make contact, Coake runs to the helipad to escape on his own, Cat and Heather give chase as Easter Harish helps stop the impending explosion, At the helipad, Coake finds Lars waiting for him, intending to kill him for revenge, but the girls arrive in time to stop him, Harish shows up to announce that he has stopped the explosion so now everyone needs to prepare for evacuation, and Lars punches Coake before rejoining the crew, In the hole, Rose notices that the spore is behaving differently, so she touches it, She manages to communicate with the spores but before you can ask her to cooperate with humanity, the rig is hit by its worst earthquake yet and is pulled out by the men, Buzz decides to stay behind to prove to the germs that humans are capable of giving too, Magnus, Rose, and Vollmer capture the last helicopter, and fly away before a tsunami hits the platform, knocking it down at the same time Buzz becomes one with the Bog, Kat notices that a tsunami is going to hit the beach and wants to warn the citizens, but the pilots push her away while Coake makes it clear that they are not going home, At that moment, a tsunami hits the city and kills Kat's wife,
